Montebello Nature Area — Dog Park in Hamilton, Illinois

The Montebello Nature Area offers a peaceful riverside escape on the outskirts of Hamilton, Illinois, enjoyed by both pet owners and nature enthusiasts. Located at 223 US Hwy 136, this pet-friendly park welcomes dogs and their families to explore scenic views of the Mississippi River and the Keokuk hydroelectric plant. While there aren’t designated, fenced dog runs or modern dog-park amenities, it’s a lovely spot to let your pup sniff out new scents, watch for eagles in the winter, and enjoy natural beauty year-round.

Families appreciate the area for its tranquility, opportunities for fishing, and occasional gem-hunting—like finding geode fragments and driftwood along the river. Great view of the Keokuk Plant and the Mississippi River. Geode fragments scattered throughout on the beach if you look enough.

Peaceful. Great spot for bird watching, especially eagles in the winter! I also enjoy finding small pieces of driftwood and the occasional (seldom) piece of river glass. It’s not much of a ‘park,’ per se, as there is little to do there. You can fish and there’s a bait ramp, as well as a short, unmaintained trail that runs along the river.

The dam is cool and the water is pretty. But it’s really not a walkable nature area. The body of water is resource for a hydroelectric plant that people can fish in apparently. Also a boat launch ? But the forestry is not walkable.
