🐾 Kids at the Dog Park: Real Stories, Safety Risks & Smarter Solutions

The Open Area Dog Run is a spacious dog park in Glenwood Springs, CO, ideal for pups who love to stretch their legs and explore. While the park is basic in terms of amenities, it offers plenty of room for dogs to run, chase grasshoppers, and enjoy the outdoors. With direct access to the nearby river, your furry friends can cool off during hot days—perfect for the adventurous canine! Pet owners looking for a simple yet genuine dog-friendly space often enjoy stopping here on trips between Fort Collins and Grand Junction, as it’s conveniently located and offers designated play areas for both big and small dogs.
This dog park is fenced and has separate sections for small and large dogs, providing a safe environment for off-leash play and socialization. The grass may be tall at times, adding a natural adventure for dogs, but there is limited shade, so summer visits might require some extra care. Access to water is available from the river, and while the facilities are minimal, the charm lies in the unfussy, open space surrounded by Colorado’s natural beauty.
11am on a hot July day, and there is a chain with a combo lock keeping the area closed. Only sign posted is with the hours, 7am – 9pm which we are definitely within. Never been here before, and only recently heard about the park. Brought my new puppy down to socialize, but obviously no one is here. I agree with some of the other comments, certainly not the nicest looking dog park. For the Glenwood Chamber to write articles about how dog friendly the city is, the City should really step it up a bit. I get that not every dog park can be like Spring Canyon Dog Park in Fort Collins (that place is incredible), but to drive past the beautiful green grass encompassing the high school that does not allow dogs on property, to park and walk down a trail to this place and find it in shoddy condition and locked is discouraging to say the least. The fence around this weed infested place is falling apart even, which just shows the lack of care or concern. I doubt we make it back here, and the hunt for a more legitimate park continues.
Nothing fancy but there was plenty of room for my dog to run. The grass was super tall but my smaller dog Marco likes chasing grasshoppers through the tall grass so he didn’t mind. It was pretty exposed and hot without too much shade in the dog run area, but right next to the river so we were able to make multiple trips to the water to cool off.
Long walk and no water access. Not the nicest dog park we have been to. Simply ok.
Fenced in area is on the upper route. Big dog and small dog areas. I l9ve this stop between fort collins and Grand Jumction to take the pups.
I luved dis place! I ran around and played ball! I luv ball! Mum tried to show me da dog dish water fountain, but mum doesn’t know where da good water is! I ran off to da good water and drank a LOT! Mum panicked and thought she lost me and sed “get out of da river!” I don’t know what her problem was because I was just on da side where it wasn’t rushing and only ankle deep. Mum sed later she just overreacted because if it was dangerous, they’d have a fence and no path to it. We will go bak when we visit but Mum will be better prepared. 5 stars!
