🐾 How to Handle Aggressive Dogs at the Dog Park – Real Advice from Dog Owners
Visiting the dog park can be a joyful activity for both you and your furry friend—but aggressive encounters can quickly […]
Old Rag Parking (Ranger Station) serves as the main access point for the challenging Old Rag Circuit hike, known for its rock scrambling and scenic mountain views. The parking area is well-maintained with new facilities including a ranger station and public restrooms, though it is not wheelchair accessible. Hikers can choose between a tough, technical scramble or a longer, easier loop trail to complete their adventure. Reservations and fees help control trail crowding, making for a more enjoyable experience. The area offers a mix of trail difficulty and natural beauty, but is more suited to experienced hikers.
3 miles to the first false summit and then it get a little crazy with bouldering which was more difficult since I’m not too tall. Definitely helps to have a taller person to help with a couple drop-downs and to get to the top of rocks that were taller than me. It was drizzling lightly and by the time we got up to the boulders it began to sleet so be prepared for changing temps and weather as the elevation gets higher. This hike take a lot of upper body as well as lower body strength but many of older people were doing fine so it’s very doable if you’re in half decent shape. Very windy at the top. The fire road (2.5 mile) seemed to take awhile but it was a nice break for our knees as the decline was painful. Nice views from the top and would like to do again when the rocks are dry and the sky is blue
Amazing hike as always. The new parking lot, bathrooms, and ranger station are a lot nicer. As annoying as it is to have to reserve ahead of time and pay, it has definitely helped with crowding on the trails.
This hike starts off deceptively easy—just a gentle walk for the first 2–3 miles. Don’t let that fool you. Eventually, you’ll arrive at a scenic viewpoint where the mountain views really open up. It’s the perfect place to take a breather and soak in the surroundings before things get intense.
After the viewpoint, the trail shifts dramatically into rock scrambling territory. It’s tough, technical, and not something I’d recommend for beginners. But if you’re up for the challenge, it’s a rewarding climb.
Once you reach the peak, the view is breathtaking—totally worth the effort.
The descent offers two options:
• The loop: Easier and more gradual, but much longer (about 9 miles total).
• The original route: Shorter at around 7 miles, but much steeper and more intense.
We took the original route back down for some extra fun of rock scramble. If you’re not confident with scrambling or steep terrain, the loop might be a better (though longer) choice.
Interesting moment along the way: I spotted a black, non-venomous snake—added a little excitement to the adventure! After the scrambling section, the trail evens out and becomes much milder, making for a more relaxed finish.
This trail is no joke, but the views and sense of accomplishment are more than worth it. Come prepared, wear good shoes, and don’t underestimate the rock scramble. If you’re an experienced hiker looking for a challenge, this one’s for you.
The closest parking lot for accessing the Old Rag Circuit. From the lot, pass the ranger station and head up to the Ridge Trail, following the blue-blazed markers. The trail is well-marked throughout.
We arrived before 6 a.m. and found parking easily, with no rangers present at that time.
Excellent rock scramble. A tough hike, with several challenges and tight spots, but the view makes it worth it. I recommend going up the scramble, then continuing on to return to the parking area via the fire road.
