Great place to bike. I starts out from Emlenton PA, Allegheny River Trail and changes name to the Samual Justus Recreation Trail. Up around Bel-Mar and 5.2 miles from Franklin PA. Another Trail called Sandy Creek Trail crosses above on a old trail trestle that goes over the Allegheny River. Both trail and a must do..
The 2 tunnels were awesome and dark (if riding/walking make sure you have a headlight/flashlight) Amazing view of mountains and The Allegheny River. Freedom Falls was really pretty too. Hubby and I had a lovely day here & will be back. 💜
Nice, clean, paved, well maintained trail. As with any open, outdoor area, there will be wildlife, some of it being dangerous, so remain aware, especially if you go off the paved trail.
I saw bike riders when kayaking on Allegheny river and figured it would also be a very scenic bike ride. This trail was by far the best bike trail I have ever experienced. Parking and porta potties at each end of a 27 mile trail along an old RR bed, including 2 very long tunnel sections through the mountain. The Tunnels were pitch black, so a headlight is a must. You can experience both Tunnels within 12 miles from Emlenton if you want a shorter up and back of 24 miles instead of 54 doing the whole trail up and back. Trail paved with some ripples from raised cracks in some areas but mostly smooth. There is one loose gravel section in the middle that was a little rough and may be a little challenging for some, but my mtb tires had no issues. Very rugged terrain and scenic all along river. I saw deer, a porcupine cross in front of me, and all kinds of birds and waterfowl along the route. The trail is fairly flat, only gaining about 450 ft. with benches at scattered locations along the route to take a break. Most of the trail is through wooded sections offering shade, but with that came some hazards in the form of falling leaves, sticks, and nuts to watch for on the path.
Nice level bike trail, easy pedaling.Went about 27 miles on the trail. Went thru both tunnels. It’s very bumpy in places along the trail. Nice scenery the whole way. Restroom only at the beginning as far as I could tell. There are places to rest along the way.
The trail is really beautiful and should be seen by all. I ride here frequently…. but the trail surface has become quite wavy and roots in some areas rough. Of course, the area that is unpaved is always horrifying. Word of caution for those who ride a recumbent trike. Make sure your width is from wheel to wheel, which is no more than 32 inches. All the bollards are really close and difficult to get thru. Anything over that width would mean you would have to stop and carry your trike over ALL of them.
