Enjoyable access trail to Highpoint carriage road. Giving 4 stars for what it is- a pleasant access trail with mountain laurel, streams, and view as you near the top. The scenic features are 3 stars compared with fives at Sam’s Point and Mohonk but no crowds and no fees. If you’re willing to go 3-5 miles in you can get to some of the major sights too. Slope is moderate but after a mile the road is eroding making surface uneven so I was glad to have stiff soles.

After a disappointing excursion at Sam’s Point, we needed to find a new hiking place. (Details to be written later in a Sam’s Point review)

Berme Road Park has various trails that appear nice on the surface. Yet, as you walk, there are no clear trail blazers and the path leads to a disturbing sign.

TIMBER RATTLESNAKE HABITAT.

Timbers are not a joke. Of course we’ve had some minor run ins with the snake. Yet, when told that the environment is a habitat, people SHOULD NOT test their luck!

Overall, the hike would have been enjoyable except for the dangerous wildlife: from ticks to timbers, it’s safer to look elsewhere.

I went with a guide which is the only way you’re permitted to go all the way to what they call the ice cave. I’m a pretty experienced hiker in this was just awesome.

I had no idea that behind the park you could hike the old carriage road. There is another path, shortly after entering the forest that takes you to a waterfall. Great spot for easy hiking and can’t wait to come back connecting to the old routes and Sam’s point.
