Northern Tail Dog Park

Northern Tail Dog Park is a welcoming and accessible dog park in East Lansing, featuring a fenced area where dogs can run freely and socialize. The park offers picnic tables and seating, surrounded by nice wooded trails for walking. It is wheelchair accessible and allows dogs off-leash, making it a great place for dogs and owners to enjoy outdoor activities together. Although the park closes in winter and lacks a water fountain, it has designated spaces for small and large dogs, providing a safe and friendly environment for all.

Nice wooded trail to go for a walk or the fenced in area with seating so they can safely run until exhausted
This park is a great place except for two things: 1) No water pump or fountain, and 2) It closes in the winter.
Why does it have to close in the winter? Some dogs LOVE playing in the snow, especially huskies, etc. but they find themselves in a state where snow only happens for a few months a year. They would LOVE to play here in the winter! (my animal companions don’t have thick coats, but still…)
Every other dog park I have been to have fountains or water pumps (well water) and the WATER park (repeat: water. park.) is so close to the dog park, you would think there would be an easy way to get city water to the dog park. The pups are always thirsty and we “owners” can’t seem to bring enough H2O!
I know this park is relatively new and I applaud the city council for creating it in the first place. I have noticed over the months that new sections have been added for smaller animal companions, which is a good idea.
I also think that funding the beautiful dog park, where families, including non-human members of the family, can safely exercise and enjoy the outdoors during COVID, soak up vitamin D, and be a part of the community is a MUCH BETTER WAY TO SPEND OUR TAX DOLLARS than a deer cull – killing deer not because they cause accidents or harm any other life, but because they eat the flower beds of the wealthiest in the city.
It is a shame that would even be considered over something like a beneficial community project like this one.
Thank you!
The park itself was fine most dogs were small n friendly Like mine.. But ma dog in particular didn’t play tpo much she spent most happening f the hour smelling thr grass n familiriAzing herself witg der. Place so… Will go bk once a week!!!
Children under 9 are not allowed at the dog park. There were about 20 people with big dogs and this parent was on their phone, not watching their child for the majority of it. Allowing their child to play with dog toys and not allow the dogs to have them, taunting dogs. Be mindful of your dogs when here; common sense is not so common.
You know, you just can’t go wrong with a dog park like this. It’s free, there’s a lot of space and neighborhoods to walk around to give your dog a break. People are usually attentive. It’s not so big so that people can completely ignore each other. You’re really get to know people, and the dogs do too!
