Located at the foot of Edison Street in Dexter, First Street Park (also known as Horseshoe Park) is a welcoming green space known for its horseshoe pits and tranquil setting against the woods. This pet-friendly park is ideal for dog owners seeking a quiet spot to enjoy the outdoors with their furry companions. The park offers several amenities, including picnic tables and a public grill, making it a perfect place for a relaxing afternoon or a small outdoor gathering.
Dogs are welcome at First Street Park, and the park is accessible with wheelchair-friendly entrances and parking. While there isn’t a dedicated fenced dog area, the open layout and wooded surroundings offer a pleasant experience for leashed walks and play. The park also provides conveniences like large horseshoe pits for recreation and a seasonal Porta-Potty for visitors.
“First Street Park, at the foot of Edison St., is nestled against the woods. It has horseshoe pits, a few picnic tables, and a Porta-Potty during warm weather. There are twelve pits now, the last two added a couple of years ago as an Eagle Scout project completed by Steve Dootz.” (Horseshoes with the Dexter Ringers, Nancy Clay, Sept. 1, 2015)
It could be spruced up a bit, but it’s a park tailor-made for tossing some horseshoes, which is super fun. In addition to the picnic tables, there is a small public grill available. It was originally created by and for the Dexter Ringers Club with help from local businesses like Cribley Drilling and Busch’s.
