Located in the scenic region of Deer Isle, Maine, Shore Acres Preserve is a popular spot for nature lovers and dog owners alike. Known for its flat, easy-to-follow hiking trails lined with mossy forest floors and a dense tree canopy, this park is a haven for those seeking dog-friendly hiking near the Maine coast. The preserve offers both short and moderately challenging hikes, with the larger perimeter loop featuring well-marked paths, timber plank crossings, and glimpses of water views through the woods. Visitors and their furry friends appreciate the tranquility and natural beauty, as well as the lightly trafficked, peaceful atmosphere.
Shore Acres is also welcoming for families, with trails suitable for children and plenty of opportunities to spot local wildlife. Although there are no traditional dog park amenities like fenced dog runs or water fountains, pet owners enjoy the leash-friendly trails and lush, shaded landscape that make for pleasant walks with their dogs year-round. The well-maintained paths are best enjoyed with proper footwear, and dog waste should always be picked up to keep the preserve beautiful for all visitors.
Nice simple, easy walking path leading to great views of the water. We were the only people there at the time of our visit, dogs enjoyed it too …
Nice area with pleasant view. But be prepared—the big perimeter loop (Goldthread/Shore/Meadow trails) is flat and well marked, and as the websites warn, there are lots of roots on the trails. But the sites that say the short hikes are easy are NOT accurate. Moderate is a better description. You’re almost constantly stepping between, on, or around tree roots. And there are numerous stretches with timber planking over boggy areas, some as long as 100+ feet and as narrow as 8-10 inches. So if you have any issues with balance or like to hike with poles, this area will be more challenging. And although the water views are nice, you’re walking mostly in the woods; and even along the shore, the trees between the trail and shore mostly block the view. So don’t come here solely for those views.
Easy effort trail, nice and flat, but there are lots of tree roots to trip on, so watch your step. Views are well worth the walk. You can bring your dogs!
Beautiful scenery and fairly easy trail. Good trail to do with kids
Nicely maintained trails with nice canopy, mossy forest floors, birds singing and beautiful hike along the shore.
