Gabions Campground and Day Use

Gabions Campground and Day Use offers a natural outdoor experience in the Huron National Forest with hiking trails, picnic tables, and onsite parking. It is a dog-friendly location suitable for families with children and provides basic amenities like restrooms and tent sites. Visitors enjoy scenic water views and hiking opportunities along the shore-to-shore trail, but should come prepared for bugs and ticks. The area has a quiet, rustic atmosphere though some may encounter rowdy campers at times.

Have been going there now for 40 years. Beautiful views, well kept outhouse
Don’t camp here unless you want to deal with a bunch of crazy drunks who blare obnoxious metal music all night long. Definitely NOT family friendly.
I only just learned that “bugs, quiet and outhouse” were all code words. Sorry folks but I’m happily married.
Stopped here for lunch during a kayaking trip. The kayak access area is less ideal than some others along this part of the Au Sable (there’s nowhere to secure your boat in the water, unless you have an anchor, so you have to drag it up a hill to secure it), but once you get on land, there’s a picnic table overlooking the water that provides a fine view. I came back later in the day to do some hiking on the shore-to-shore trail (there’s a couple places to meet up with it in this campground, just look for the blue blazes). It’s a NULL fee for day use, and then limited places to park. We found an area with a couple camp sites and space for extra cars and parked there. The trail in this area is overgrown, so ticks are a problem as well as small downed limbs, but it’s a nice little walk if you’re prepared for them.
Love this place. Favorite campsite in the Huron national Forest. Been here 3 times in last 2 years. Bugs can be bad though. Be prepared with bug spray!
