McFarlan Woods, Mt. Airy Forest

McFarlan Woods at Mt. Airy Forest is a quiet, shady, and beautifully maintained park featuring overgrown yet accessible hiking trails. It offers a great setting for intimate gatherings or family fun, with amenities like a large shelter equipped with stone fireplaces, horseshoe pits, and even a volleyball net. The park’s natural terrain can be challenging, especially for older dogs, and some areas may need trail maintenance. While the park is generally clean and pleasant, occasional police presence has been noted as a reflection of the surrounding neighborhood.

I enjoyed my short trek through the E Trail however I spent 15 minutes trying to find the entrance to the trail. I found that the trails are over grown and there are a lot of fallen trees blocking some of the trails. If you plan to take a dog with you, i strongly recommend you don’t bring an older dog that may get worn out easily from the hills and climbing over the trees. Wouldn’t mind going back. I hope that once all this pandemic stuff calms down the trails will get some care.
It really is a nice little park. Well maintained and beautiful! But unfortunately there was a need for constant police presence. Which is no reflection of the park but the neighborhood.
Decent place to have a simple and fun trek experience.
It’s nice there. There’s a great shelter with 2 built in stone fireplaces, horseshoe pits, and I even seen a volley ball net up there.
Then go have a nice hike
The paths are a really overgrown all the time, but doable. But overall a great park that is quiet, very shady in most parts and a great place to grill out from an intimate setting to great family fun. Very clean park.
