Marsh Trail Dog-Friendly Guide

If you’re looking for a scenic and pet-friendly trail in Chincoteague, Virginia, Marsh Trail is a top pick for nature lovers and dog owners. This paved, flat trail is easy to navigate, making it perfect for leisurely dog walks and accessible for wheelchair users. Marsh Trail offers panoramic views of the marsh, numerous opportunities for birding, and wildlife sightings—including glimpses of wild ponies and fox squirrels. Benches are scattered along the loop, providing spots to rest and soak in the peaceful surroundings.

Keep in mind that there is limited shade in some sections and the trail can get buggy, especially during the summer months. Bug spray is recommended for both you and your furry friend. Parking is available near the entrance and the trail is conveniently located close to the Chincoteague Visitor Center. While the trail itself is pet-friendly for leashed dogs, note that many nearby trails, as well as the beaches and Assateague Island, are not dog-friendly, so Marsh Trail is a valuable spot for those exploring Chincoteague with a dog.

We visited this short loop trail off-season in the summer. The marsh is intentionally dried out to mud each year by park staff. This allows migrating birds to gorge on insects and plants in spring. This activity peaks in May. There’s a lookout platform and telescope for seasonal viewing. There’s little shade on the trail and it was buggy in summer. There’s a parking lot by the entrance and this trail is close to the Visitor Center.
