My wife and I love coming here. Tons of trails to explore, the lighthouse, the beach and ponies, what more do you need. Everything about the park and town are so relaxing. Definitely a great place to come to if you want to explore and unwind.
Absolutely breathtaking wildlife. Bring binoculars/zoom lens camera if you have them. The wild ponies are often several hundred yards out. A paradise for birders and nature enthusiasts.
Cannot stress enough how much you need head-to-toe bugspray (preferably with DEET), especially on the Woodland trail. We went in early September and the mosquitoes and horseflies were still brutal even with good coverage; we rented bikes one day and that significantly helped. You can drive through Wildlife Loop after 3pm most days.

Beautiful island!! As soon as you get onto the island you already feel the vibes. It’s a cute little town full of shops and food. Plenty of places to rent a scooter/moped/ golf cart , definitely the best way to get around. The park and beaches are scenic and gorgeous, although as much as I tried I couldn’t find any wild ponies which is the main attraction of the island…. But even without them was definitely worth my time to visit there.

Came here with my wife during our 1-year anniversary trip 😊 This whole area is so beautiful and its teeming with wildlife! We didn’t see any of the horses when we came, but we saw and heard lots of birds! The first day we came it was super windy as Hurricane Erin was bashing the southeast. It had done some considerably damage to the main beach area here, so when we came back today we took the Swan Cove Trail. Somehow, that stretch of beach looked untouched, which was interesting. And again, lots of birds! We had a great time checking this place out and walking on the beach, even during the first visit 😂

I’m an Appalachian and Blue Ridge Mountain girl who hates the beach. But not anymore! I’m glad to see an unspoiled natural area still exists within a day’s drive! No boardwalks; no loud music; no obnoxious people screaming at their unruly youngsters within an arm’s reach on every side who kick sand on your blanket every time they move. No trash rolling by like tumbleweeds while you try to enjoy the views.
Beautiful, natural beach. (sigh)
Ponies in the marshland. Bike trails everywhere. Wildlife Refuge Center. Birds everywhere-not just seagulls! Plovers, Bob-White, Cormorants, Egrets, Bald Eagles, and plenty of song birds.
Did I mention no boardwalks? (sigh) I can’t wait to go back!
