🐾 Kids at the Dog Park: Real Stories, Safety Risks & Smarter Solutions

Cheney Dog Park offers local pet owners a spacious, off-leash area to let their dogs play and socialize. Located in Cheney, Washington, the park features separate sections for large and small dogs, each with secure fencing and a double-gated entry system to enhance safety. Although the terrain is more natural with abundant weeds and shrubs rather than manicured grass, the energetic environment provides a great spot for dogs to roam and make new friends. The park is generally uncrowded, making it ideal for a laid-back outing.
While basic amenities like a water fountain and benches are not available (so be sure to bring your own water and seating), the park does provide poop bags and trash cans. There is a small on-site parking lot along with ample street parking. If you’re seeking a dog-friendly park in Cheney that isn’t too crowded and offers plenty of space for your furry friend, Cheney Dog Park is worth a visit.
Unfortunately I did not have a good experience at all. During the time I was there with my dogs, TWO different people came in and left the gates completely wide open. Do they not understand how dog parks work? Not ok, period. I won’t go where there are such irresponsible dog owners.
The main area is nice and big but would definitely be better if there was a picnic table or a watering station. Other than that it’s great.
The Cheney Dog Park is a big park with good fences. The gates are the typical 2 gate system that helps prevent dogs from getting out. There are 2 sections – one for small dogs and the other for big dogs. There is a small parking lot [4 or 5 cars] and ample street parking.
Dog owners need to bring their own water – no water source is available in or near the dog park. If you need to sit, bring a chair – There are no benches.
It is never crowded. There are rarely more than 2 or 3 dogs there, and the people who use the park are friendly (in my experience).
The ground cover is mostly weeds, “volunteer” alfalfa, and very little grass.
Bags are available for cleaning up after your dog. Unfortunately, a lot of people do not seem to use these bags — this is a “watch your step” park.
Still – it is a good place to throw a ball for your dog, meet other dogs and dog owners.
I’ve been to better (and worse) dog parks. They have a list up of all these rules, which is nice and all, but maybe they should have actual grass there instead weeds and such. How can we pick up our dogs poop with how unkept that place is?
The large dog side is enormous and the small dog side is pretty decent size as well. The ground isn’t well groomed and there are a lot of shrubs. But, the dogs were happy. I did not see a station for getting water. But, they did have poop bags and a trash can. I was pleased because it really wasn’t crowded.
