Oat Hill Mine Trailhead is a beloved spot for hiking enthusiasts and their canine companions, conveniently located in scenic Calistoga, California. This pet-friendly trail features remarkable volcanic rock formations, sweeping valley and mountain views, and a rich display of native wildflowers each spring. Offering both gentle and challenging climbs, it’s an ideal place for those seeking dog-friendly hiking in Napa Valley.
This trail welcomes leashed dogs and is perfect for active owners who want to enjoy nature with their pets. While the initial miles offer some tree cover, much of the trail becomes exposed to the sun, especially after the 2-mile mark, so plan for ample shade, water, and sun protection for both you and your dog. Do note that ticks are prevalent in the area, so tick checks are recommended after your visit. Remember to bring plenty of water and to clean up after your pet to help keep this gorgeous open space pleasant for everyone.
Walked a bit past 4-mile marker on the trail and returned. Enjoyed valley and mountain views. The surface is very rugged, but the climb is rather gentle. I would recommend wearing hiking boots. Not much shade on the trail past 2-mile marker. Wear sunblock or long sleeves and carry a lot of water. It may get very hot on the exposed sections.
