FAQ for Hardscrabble Wilderness Area in Briarcliff Manor New York:
Typical of New York, this is a nature preserve neighbored by affluent homes. Where people from the surrounding area walk thier dogs off leash and yet are mad when you do the same. I met four dogs all off leash with 3 sets of owners. 2 owners were nice the other was honestly offended I was in ‘our’ (their) park. Typical NY forest, will be back to see the more interesting features. Would be runnable by mid spring for those of you who trail run.
Free, rugged, not busy. Nice streams and hilly formations
Surprisingly wild, yet within eye sight of some beautiful homes! Genuinely solid trail, with some challenging slopes, and good views.
Great spot to go hiking, lots of different short trails! Didn’t have enough daylight to try them all but will be back to try them out. Bonus: Its dog friendly, so be prepared for 4 legged companions. The people here are also really friendly as well.
Relatively small in terms of trail coverage, but feels nicely wild. Very popular with dog owners. It’s usually empty enough for well-behaved dogs to be allowed to run free (technically that isn’t legal, but no one is stopping anyone).
