It was a great experience! They were so friendly, knowledgeable and engaging with my son! This is a must do!
It may sound kind of crazy, but this was by far one of the coolest things I have ever done in my life. My daughter would definitely rate this experience as her highest, better than Disney World even! She is a huge dog sledding fan and has spent time learning about it on her own (here in South Carolina where we get almost no snow!!) This experience was her Christmas gift and Wilderness Adventures Kennel could not have delivered a more personalized, thorough experience. I had reached out to another big kennel in Colorado to ask about their tours, especially with having a sled dog obsessed ten year old that would be riding, and when I left a voicemail, I received a text back a couple of days later that said their info was all on the website. When I called Wilderness Adventure Kennel in Breezewood, PA, Herb called me back promptly and spent a lot of time explaining the tour, as well as his experience with sled dogs. He was excited to have my husky obsessed 10 year old to the kennel and made me feel like it was as special to him as it would be to us. Herb has traveled with the Iditerod as the teacher! He is a 4th grade teacher, so explaining things and his patience just comes naturally.
We were super lucky the day that we arrived, and it had been snowing enough that my daughter was able to get out on an actual sled and get the full snow sled experience. There were two other handlers helping along with Herb and his wife, and they were all so kind and hospitable. We loved them all and I felt like we were old friends. We got hot chocolate, cookies and they even gave my daughter a special book and little husky plush dog that stays in her bed now. Herb spent so much time with my daughter, explaining everything about mushing, from the clothing to the sleds to where you sleep at night on long treks. He even shared a presentation with her with photos of him on races! She was wide-eyed the whole time, taking it all in! Then we got to meet the dogs. They were very friendly and sweet and SUPER excited to pull! Herb helped my daughter put the harnesses on one of the dogs, who became one of her favorites (of course she knew all of their names by the end of our day). It was a thrilling experience to be pulled by these beautiful dogs that listened so well to the musher. I felt like we were in good hands. We spent about 3 or so hours with them total, and we both hated to leave.
All in all, it was such a great experience, and I would recommend it to anyone that wants to do something fun and different. Especially dog lovers! This is the best!
