Located in Western Maryland, Greenbrier State Park offers a great escape for families and dog owners looking to enjoy nature, well-kept trails, spacious campgrounds, and beautiful scenery. Known for its pet-friendly trails and designated camping loops, this park is a top pick for those seeking dog-friendly hiking in Boonsboro and the greater Frederick County area. The park offers miles of well-marked trails perfect for dogs on leashes, and Loop D in the campground is especially pet-friendly, making it an ideal stop for dog lovers looking for camping with their furry companions.
While dogs are not permitted on the sandy lake beach between Memorial Day and Labor Day, they are welcome in other areas of the park, including the large grassy lawns above the lake where pups can stretch, play, or rest. With plenty of shaded picnic areas, clean restrooms, and friendly staff, Greenbrier State Park is a wonderful spot for a day trip or an overnight nature getaway with your leashed dog.

It has clean bathrooms, clear water, lifeguards, stocked lake, concession stands, amazing views. We will definitely be back.

It was our first time here and we were very impressed at the facilities offered, tables and grills were everywhere, bathrooms were clean, beach and water were clean. Staff was helpful and friendly. Dogs are allowed in the park, leashed, but not on the beaches between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

We recently visited Greenbrier State Park with the family and had an amazing time—both for a fun-filled day and an overnight camping experience. This park is a gem tucked away in Western Maryland, and it’s perfect for nature lovers, families, and weekend getaways.
Nature & Trails:
The hiking trails are well-marked and suitable for all ages. Our kids enjoyed the short loops, and the forest scenery was peaceful and refreshing. Great for light adventure and stretching your legs.
Camping:
We camped for 2 nights and were really impressed. The campground is clean, spacious, and well-organized. There are 4 camping loops, and Loop D is pet-friendly (a great bonus for those traveling with dogs). Each site had a fire ring and picnic table, and the loops had easy access to restrooms and water. Quiet hours were respected, and it felt very family-friendly and safe.
Lake & Beach:
The lake is clean and calm, with a sandy beach area that’s perfect for swimming and relaxing. While pets are not allowed in the lake or beach area, there’s a large lawn above the lake where dogs can play or rest. Lifeguards were on duty, and it felt secure for kids to splash around.
Picnic & Facilities:
There are great picnic spots with tables and grills, many shaded by trees. Bathrooms and changing areas were clean and conveniently located. Everything felt well-maintained and thoughtful for families.
Important Tip:
If you’re planning a day visit on weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day, make sure to reserve a Day-Use pass online in advance, as it does fill up quickly during peak season.
