We went on a Friday afternoon around 1:30pm and there was hardly any parking left. Started off nice and easy but got more technical and steep as we progressed. Dogs needed some help in a few spots. View at the top was amazing. Decided to take the loop back as it was less technical. This probably would not have felt as challenging as it did if we had not already been to Rondaxe and Stillwater in the morning.

Beautiful hike. Was able to complete it in an hour and a half with our kids and my bad foot.

Castle Rock is a short hike with a spectacular view in Blue Mountain Lake, NY. There are multiple hikes that can be done from this trailhead including Sargent Pond, Blue Mountain Lake, and Castle Rock. The most popular trails are the ones that go up to Castle Rock for the view of Blue Mountain Lake.
The hike up Castle Rock can be a little deceiving. It first starts off as a red-blazed trail on a relatively flat gravel road. Eventually the trail goes right and becomes a path in the woods that starts to ascend. You will eventually come to a trail intersection by a bridge where you can go to Upper Sargent Pond on a red marked trail or Castle Rock on a yellow marked trail. For the shortest route up choose the yellow marked trial to Castle Rock. Cross the bridge by the intersection and the trail will start getting steeper. You will notice several large moss covered boulders along the way to the top. As you get close to the summit the yellow blazed trail will split
into two different trails, both marked yellow. This is slightly confusing for sure. Either trail will reach the summit. If you go the long way up to the summit you will notice more large boulders and some crevice and cave-like features in the rocks. The trail to the summit is steep and narrow.
The summit offers great views of Blue Mountain Lake. You should also be able to see several other nearby Adirondack Mountains including nearby Blue Mountain with its fire tower. This 1.5 mile one-way hike offers great rewards.
The trailhead parking lot is next to the Syracuse University Minnowbrook Conference Center. There is room for about 10 vehicles. The hike is a popular one in the area and the lot can fill up. If you’re in the Blue Mountain Lake area and want to experience the glory of the Adirondacks this a great place to do it!

Love this hike. It is not too bad and can be done by most. The real treat is climbing the castle rock at the end. Make sure not to miss it. Great fun for everyone including dogs!

We loved this hike!! After reading an Adirondack Kids book that featured this hike we just knew we needed to come see it for ourselves in person. Our 5 year old had no trouble hiking this with us (tho she is a seasoned hiker and had been hiking trails with us since she was 2.5). There were some tricky spots to navigate towards the summit, but just take your time and be careful and it’s very doable. The view from the top was absolutely worth it!! We hiked the the whole loop so we went a different way down than we had come up. Great trail. Well maintained. And lots of great photo ops.
