Please, if you go here be respectful this is a wonderful area that is full of biodiversity and beauty nothing like the cottonwood canyons. There are multitudes of different trees, insects and animals living here it is magical and amazing (minus the occasional beer can or broken bottle). The fall colors were starting to show when I went up on August 26th 2025 the road is janky and slow. But why come here to speed trough the natural beauty?

Lots of wildlife and a beautiful canyon Road. Be safe don’t go speeding. People come down quickly because it’s a steep hill.

I love driving up Butterfield canyon, especially to see the leaves during the fall. I have brought multiple friends/family/clients to various spots to take pictures and they always turn out great. Rare care when driving all the way to the top (as others have mentioned), as the road is really narrow and right along the mountain (steep drop off with no guard rails). But the views are gorgeous! Bike trails are also great!

Here you’ll find some of the best biking and hiking trails in Herriman. The trails are well packed and berms are high. Although most trails have no restrictions on the use of horses, I personally recommend AGAINST horse riding here…narrow trails.

This is a really nice option on the west side of the valley. Appropriate for walking, biking or hiking.
There is trail that goes along the river on the south side of the road. That’s only for the the few first miles. If you’re driving you can go up the road for about 5 or 6 miles and hike in that area, but driving is only doable during the open season during the summer.
Keep an eye for deer and birds. I saw a falcon the other day.
Some schoolers may visit theirs canyon as well as I have seen so much graffiti and every time I go I see teen couples laying in the grass (just something to keep in mind if you’re considering bringing your kids).
