🐾 How to Handle Aggressive Dogs at the Dog Park – Real Advice from Dog Owners
Visiting the dog park can be a joyful activity for both you and your furry friend—but aggressive encounters can quickly […]
If you’re looking for a dog park in Bergenfield, New Jersey, Bergenfield Dog Park is a convenient community option. Nestled near an old hockey rink, this park offers separate fenced runs for large and small dogs (over and under 25 lbs), letting your pets run off-leash while socializing in a safe environment. The park surface is hard gravel, which helps keep things cleaner, though it can get warm on hot days. While amenities are currently basic, the space provides an opportunity for exercise and play, and improvements may be added over time as local pet owners advocate for more features.
The area is wooded with tall trees, lending some natural shade but also meaning that ticks and mosquitoes can be a concern in warmer months—so plan accordingly. Although the park is a bit hidden and could use better signage, it’s appreciated by locals who are glad to have an off-leash dog-friendly area in Bergenfield. There is no agility equipment or water fountain yet, so be sure to bring your own water and fun toys. If you’re searching for a simple dog-friendly park near Bergenfield with fenced play areas, this spot is worth a visit.
I was so pleased to learn Bergenfield finally opened a dog park! Yet, I learned about it through the grapevine. I don’t think many residents know about it, so it’s was completely empty. Hope more people will bring there dogs here eventually. I’m really grateful we finally have a dog park, but I must say it’s really bare so I hope with time more will be added. A water spout to fill up dog bowl would be great, and perhaps some items of interest for the dogs to interact with. My only real gripe is that it very woody in this area, so I’m afraid ticks may be a concern, it’s mosquito infested, and it’s quite scary to be there alone (other residents I’ve now spoken too have mentioned to this to me as well). Therefore, be great if the landscaping can be cleaned up a bit and make it more inviting and look less remote. Update- the park has gravel now so it looks a little better. Another ask that would be appreciated are lights. Since it’s now starting to get dark early and the park is surrounded by tall trees/shrubs where light doesn’t filter through as the sun sets, it be a great plus if lights were incorporated. A few visitors had to use our car lights the other day as a substitute.
Updated: most of the issues below have been addressed. Glad to have the park so close to home.
I bring my two dogs here regularly.
The latch on the first door into the large dog run is broken.
The latch on the large entrance is oversized for the pole and is not secured in any way.
The fences were not secured properly into the ground, which meant they had to add wood around the bottom of both runs.
While I love having this close to home, they used the cheapest possible materials, from the locks to the waste receptacles, and the fencing and was built as cheap as possible. One quarter of the large run is starting to be overrun with weeds. No one seems to be maintaining the park.
I have started a Facebook group – Bergenfield Dog Park. Please join. Hopefully over time it’s upgraded and they fix whats not right.
It’s not very visible if you are not from the local. very nice to have a place for the furry friends to play and run.
The ground is hard gravel. It does get hot when it’s a hot day. So be prepared to bring water for your furry babies.
There are 2 sides of the fences. One for the 25 pounds plus, one for the under. In any case, it’s a great place for the kids to enjoy!
Love this place. Lots of friendly dog owners and dogs. Weekends kind of slow. Wish there was more than a rock for dogs to interact with. Maybe like a little supplemental obstacle course would be nice. Bc if you come here when theres no other dogs with your dog theres not much else to do besides fetch.
Decent dog park, but a little hidden. There needs to be more signs on the main roads. Pretty clean in the park, but the area just seems so shady and lonesome. There is an old hockey rink and construction trucks next to the park. Just be cautious driving and walking in.
