Saxl Park, located conveniently on Mt Hope Ave in Bangor, Maine, is a local gem well-known for its wide-open fields, wooded trails, and pet-friendly atmosphere. With miles of mowed and wooded paths, this park offers dog owners a wonderful spot to enjoy scenic, dog-friendly hiking and peaceful strolls next to a calm river. The park features plenty of open space for exercise, shaded spots under trees to cool off, benches and tables for relaxation, and easy access to the water—making it perfect for a splash with your dog on a hot day.
Saxl Park stands out for its quiet, natural setting, diverse wildlife sightings (like deer, turkeys, and even the occasional bear!), and the peaceful environment rarely crowded with people. While the trails are not always well-marked, there are maps posted for guidance, and the area is well maintained and clean. Free parking and a porta-john at the entrance add to the park’s convenience for local dog owners searching for pet-friendly trails and a nature escape right in Bangor.
Great place to walk
Pretty park for nature walks. Trails aren’t well marked.
Saxl Park is a wonderful venue for cross country meets. Plenty of parking and a variety of course distances. There can be some wet areas when the weather isn’t cooperative though.
We brought our dog and cat here to stretch their legs, and it was so perfect. They have mowed trails and lots of open space, so nice to run our dog (cat loved it too!), as we were the only ones there. We did find a tick on our dog, so check yourselves and your pets after!
This is a large field area. During summer when the field is growing, wide pathways are cut through. In the fall, the fields are used for cross-country track meets. The fields can be significant wet after a rain and spring/summer you do need to watch for ticks. Wildlife does traverse the field.
