Depending on what time of the year you go, it may be charming and vivid with wildflowers and green grass, or dry, hot, dusty and dead like most of California and my made-up music career in the warmer months.

This trail is quite overgrown in some sections and present a neat “Ow, what got into my sock?” game that can entertain and frustrate you for hours afterward. I accidentally scrapped the side of the trail last time and was rewarded with prickly foxtails to chide me for the rest of this hike.

While dogs are allowed on trail, I would advise to bring extra water and to always pat your animals down afterward to check for ticks as well as to remove foxtails which can migrate from fur into flesh and muscle.

The trail meanders downwards toward a section of the San Joaquin River known as Horseshoe Bend (no, not THAT Horseshoe Bend…) which you can cool down and rest at. This section is very sandy (think beach sand) and slightly steep, though if you fall, chances are your ego would be more hurt than anything else.

Overall, a quiet place to visit as this trail doesn’t get many visitors since there’s not much to look at until you reach the terminus of the trail. The parking area is on the small and sad side. I’d do this if I was out of other trails to hike or if I really had a need to scratch myself and remove stuff from my shoes after the hike.

Do: Springtime, Cooler Weather, light drizzle.
Don’t: Summer, warm weather, hot weather, any weather not in the “Do” section.

Quite, peaceful, relaxing. Everyone fishing or walking there dog or spending the day there seamed polite and friendly. Cool spot to go if you want to get out of Fresno for the day without having to drive for a long amount of time.

It’s longer than 6.5 miles. It’s closer to 8 miles round trip. Super steep climb up from the sand beach. Alot of up and down terrain.
