Very well restored and well kept. The Visitors Center is relatively new with lots of exhibits and a gift shop. The fort is full of displays and is open to walk around.
It was a crazy walk in history!! Have never explored anything like this before. Will be going back to learn more. They had a very informational museum with movies, posters and they also have alot of different things in there gift shop. They also do a personal informational tour in the fort or you can tour on your own. The fort has different rooms where you were able to enter and see more historical items. Our visit was about 2 hours long (with no tour). We will visit again.
My husband and I love going to places like this! We have been to several different forts, but this one is amazing! They have made history time to life with their displays inside the fort! The visitors center is grand and the volunteers there are very knowledgeable! Please go and see Fort Macon, you won’t be dissappointed! Bring your walking shoes!
This is one of my favorite parks. Went with a friend for the Thursday cannon demonstration, and very interesting, authentic, informative and fun! It wasn’t crowded at all, we had a great view and could clearly hear the speaker. Lol tho next time I may bring ear plugs 😉
This has always been our go-to trail as a couple, and now as a family. Beautiful and simple. We love it so much, we decided to get married on the trail head this past April!
Free admission. Historic military fort with great exhibits and engaging history. The exhibit areas are air-conditioned, and the gift shop/visitor’s center is very close to the fort (literally right next to it.) Plenty of parking.
I have been to Fort Macon State Park, more times than I can remember. The Fort has come a LONG way from what I remember in my childhood. At Fort Macon, you will see how the Fort was constructed, artifacts used during this time, images, and a true perspective of what life use to look like. There is more to Fort Macon State Park other than the actual Fort itself. Hike trails, swimming on the ocean side or the edge of the sound meeting the ocean, and take in the stunning views from the top of the Fort.Additional, if you have never been, I recommend going when they first open, to avoid crowds and to take time to appreciate each room. You can spend 2 hours just at the Fort, and you might not see everything. You won’t know how much spent went by exploring everything just inside the Fort.My 3 Favorite things:1. The original baking oven to the Fort.2. The room with all of the uniforms on mannequins.3. My Favorite thing- go on a day they fire the cannons. I recommend ear protection, no matter how far you sit.I don’t work for the Park, and I’m not paid for this review, but I do hope that you enjoy the Fort, and please feel free to to drop some change in the donation box, so people for generations will be able to enjoy the beautiful place nestled on the tip of the Island.
Great walkway – lots of natural shade over the walking path. Downside is the horse flies! Not sure if there is a peak season but we just went (end of April) and we were getting bit every few minutes!
The trail only leads to the marsh area. Not much to see
Great short, kid-friendly trail that ends at the sound waters edge. The marsh section was unwalkable but you don’t have to go that way. Cool live oak trees for climbing along the way. Perfect walk on a mild, mid-march day. I can see how it would be insanely buggy in summer though but we had no problems.
