Mount Pleasant National Scenic Area, located in Amherst, Virginia, offers a tranquil escape from city life with its scenic trails, rolling hills, and breathtaking views. While this is not a typical fenced dog park, it is well-loved by hikers and nature enthusiasts looking for dog-friendly hikes in the region. The park features several color-coded hiking and multi-use trails, making it a popular spot for both beginner and experienced hikers. The White and Yellow trails provide moderate to strenuous climbs, rewarding visitors with stunning vistas and peaceful woodland walks.
This outdoor gem boasts plenty of space for walking and exploring with your leashed dog; however, note that off-leash areas and traditional dog park amenities like fencing or water fountains are not present. The park is open year-round, and the small parking lot at the trailhead fills up quickly on weekends. It’s a great choice for dogs and owners who love adventuring together on pet-friendly trails in Amherst, VA. Be sure to bring your own water, waste bags, and tick repellant, as natural conditions and wildlife are part of the experience!
It was a beautiful experience to explore the park. A wonderful (FREE!) escape from the hustle and bustle of the sounds of the city. Highly recommend for a day trip, or an overnight stay. The views were awesome and the calmness of the woods were an incredible time.
It’s both pleasant and scenic, what more could you ask for?
Very pleasant and pretty hike. Most of the climb is quite a gradual incline making for a very easy hike.
Great place to take a family hike! The views are amazing! I would recommend to bring water and snacks if you choose to hike because it will take a few hours of your day.
Stunning vistas and beautifully cut trails. All of the wild flowers were in full bloom when I was last up there(late July) and not too crowded.
