Founded in 1907, Altavista owes its existence to the construction of the Virginian Railway, which established a crucial stop in this location. The town was purposefully planned and developed alongside the railroad, which shaped its early growth and commercial activity. For most of the 20th century, Altavista’s identity was synonymous with the Lane Company, a massive furniture manufacturer established in 1912. The company became famous for its iconic cedar chests and grew into a dominant force in the furniture industry, serving as the town’s primary employer and the bedrock of its economy for generations.
Following the closure of the Lane Company factory, Altavista has worked to diversify its economic base. Today, the town’s largest employer is a significant Abbott Nutrition facility, which produces a range of nutritional products and provides stable employment for the region. The local economy is further supported by manufacturing companies like BGF Industries, which produces high-performance textiles, alongside various small businesses that cater to the town and surrounding Campbell County. This transition reflects a shift from a single-industry town to a more varied and resilient economic model.
Life in Altavista is characterized by its small-town charm and its connection to the natural landscape. Nestled along the Staunton River, the town offers residents access to outdoor activities through community spaces like English Park, which features boat launches, walking trails, and sports facilities. This blend of a quiet, community-focused lifestyle with a steady industrial presence defines modern Altavista, making it a representative example of a small Virginia town that honors its industrial past while adapting to the future.

This is a beautifully landscaped park located off the beaten path in southern Virginia- picturesque is how I would describe it.It has hills and the greenest grass – one has to pause just to take to take in all the scenery. There is a shelter – more like a large gazebo located on top of a mound. My family member & I were able to drive carefully up the the shelter carefully joining others for a cookout. There was a breeze blowing even though a grill was going nearby as well as fish frying. There are picnic tables as well as big containers for trash. It was refreshing just to take in all the fresh air and beautiful scenery. We carefully made our way down the mound with no problems. There is a wet area for children & the young at heart.Noticeable there is a larger occupied shelter on the other side of the park. There is also a lake on the park for other water activities. So beautiful- this gem is tucked away in Altavista Va near Greta Va & about 30 miles from Lynchburg Va.More photos next time we visit this beautiful park

Kids and Adults seem to enjoy the splash pad here! The playground area is very nice and up to date. Large covered area with picnic tables. Restrooms and a vending machine for beverages.

Went Memorial Day weekend with my kids and nephew and niece, as well as a friend and her son. We really enjoyed ourselves. We picked a spot on the grass between spray ground and playground. Was able to see kids really well no matter which they decided to play on. There was plenty of fun for everyone. Basketball court on the other side of spray ground. Table and pavilion with lots of seats close to playground and spray ground. Bathrooms were close and clean. No grill at specific pavilion but was a negative. There are plenty of other pavilions and seats in the park. Boating, swimming, and soccer fields as well as trails. And large build to rent for large family gatherings. Plenty of parking. I will definitely be going back there again.
