Los Altos Park Dog Park – Albuquerque, NM

Located just off I-40 in Albuquerque, Los Altos Park offers a fenced dog park for both locals and travelers needing a pet-friendly stop. The park provides convenient access from the highway, making it a good option for those passing through or looking for a dog park in Albuquerque, New Mexico, but be prepared for some noise from the nearby freeway.

Recent renovations have improved other areas of the park, such as the skate park and fields, but accessibility challenges remain for the dog play area—especially for those with disabilities, as handicap-accessible parking and gates are lacking, and shade is minimal. There is a basic water source, though it’s not especially convenient for filling bowls, so owners are advised to bring their own water for their pets. Separate areas for small and large dogs exist, but caution is needed as gaps in fencing could allow small dogs to access unintended areas. The park’s benches provide a spot to rest, but seating and shade are limited. The grass is regularly mowed, contributing to an open, pet-friendly environment.

Unfortunately, Los Altos Park has been redesigned to discourage the unhoused so successfully, it’s no longer appealing to people either.

The skate park area and the new 15 mph road (that Google doesn’t recognize) are inviting, but the dog park is now the least accessible dog park in Albuquerque. The small dog area has gaps that allow small dogs access to the freeway and the large dog area both, and there’s zero handicap accessible parking. Also zero shade, and while there is water, it will all drain away before the dog gets over being sprayed full force trying to drink. No way to fill bowls, and the gates require manual open and close, and are not handicap accessible by any stretch of the imagination.

I’ve been multiple times at different times of the day, and the I-40 noise has zero buffer making it unwelcoming and impossible to have a conversation. Definitely not conducive to building relationships.

The baseball fields look beautiful, hopefully they will get plenty of use.

Easy to drive to, but gad to park at a distance. Um elderly and severely l yarthritic. Then had to walk thru wood chips which was fine for my dog but not for me.. I brought water but left it in car, accidentally. Maybe there will be some shade when trees mature.. we sat on a bench and saw many vehicles speed by on the freeway. No large or small dogs nor any other creature seen. When I gained the courge ri trek ba k to the car, we made our way
