🐾 Kids at the Dog Park: Real Stories, Safety Risks & Smarter Solutions

Hitchcock Woods is one of the largest urban forests in the nation, welcoming dog owners and their four-legged friends to enjoy scenic, pet-friendly trails right in Aiken, South Carolina. With towering pine trees, peaceful natural surroundings, and over 2,000 acres to explore, this dog park alternative offers an ideal getaway for those who love hiking, birdwatching, jogging, and immersing themselves in the outdoors with their pup. Dogs are allowed on all the trails, making it a fantastic spot for dog-friendly hiking and leisurely walks.
Families visiting the Clark Road entrance will appreciate that the trails are good for kids and provide options for both gentle walks and more physical hikes. While the paths are not fenced or marked as official off-leash areas, Hitchcock Woods stands out for its natural beauty, shade from mature trees, and the peaceful, uncrowded experience it offers. Please note, parking is very limited at this entrance, and some trails may be challenging or recently impacted by storm damage, so sturdy footwear and a trail map are recommended!
As many trees down from Helene as standing, at least where we entered. Much like my backyard, just flatter. Will return!
Parking was limited, led to a private road. Woods is great. Hiked on a weekday before sunset and there was nobody there.
This area is currently closed due to the resent hurricane damage, which is a bummer because it looks like a really cool spot to explore. 🤷
There are 7 entrances to this area. I started at the Clark Road entrance. There is very little parking is available at this entrance. I only went about 1/4-1/2 mile, made a loop and headed back. The hills were steep and gutted so make sure to wear non slippery shoes. I’m told that not all the trails are like that. The trails themselves are not clearly marked so be sure to grab a map so you can keep track of where you are. And watch for horse manure! Unlike dogs, owners do not have to pick it up. .
This is a wonderful place to walk or ride a horse in the middle of the city. There seems to be endless miles to walk or ride and all of it, in nature, that feels so detached from the city. The terrain can be easy or physical depending on your choice to walk. A couple warnings, don’t go alone unless you are very capable. Also, if you don’t have a very good sense of direction, use a gps or other mapping app while you explore this true gem.
