I recently visited the dog park near my house, and while it has some great features, my experience was marred by the behavior of a few individuals.
First, the park itself is quite lovely. It’s well-maintained, with plenty of shade for both dogs and their owners. I appreciate the clean environment and the overall layout, which makes it a nice spot for dogs to socialize and play.
However, I encountered a significant issue with some of the other park-goers. On several visits, particularly in the afternoons, I noticed a cliquish atmosphere. Many of the regulars seem to act like they own the place, and unfortunately, their behavior can be quite rude. During one visit, I was told that my polite and calm teenage son, who is 5’7”, wasn’t allowed in as there is a “no kids allowed” policy. This was surprising and unnecessary, especially since he was well-behaved and left everyone and their dogs alone.

More troubling was an incident with my dogs. My older dog can be vocal but is non-aggressive, while my 11-month-old puppy is energetic and playful. When a new dog entered the park, my dogs, eager to welcome the newcomer, unintentionally overwhelmed him. I tried to manage the situation by moving my older dog away to avoid scaring the new arrival. However, the owners of the new dog jumped to conclusions, misinterpreting my puppy’s enthusiasm as aggression and even resorting to kicking her. This was shocking behavior, and when I defended my puppy, a woman from the clique chimed in, further escalating the situation.

It’s disheartening to see that if you’re not part of their group, you risk facing unfair treatment or even aggression from others. I’ve read similar complaints from other visitors, which suggests this is not an isolated incident.
In summary, while the park has its merits, the negative experiences with certain individuals can overshadow the enjoyment for many dog owners. If you’re looking for a welcoming environment for both you and your dogs, I would recommend considering other options or visiting during off-peak hours when the atmosphere is more relaxed.

Different spaces for different sized dogs with locking gates. Shade, water, good parking. No bathrooms.

Park has 2 separate areas for small and big dogs. The areas are on the small size with respect to the space to run. Looks like it would the areas will hold water if it had recently rained. A pretty big section in the large dog area is dirt. Very tight parking area, with only a few spaces. We were the only ones here. This park that will work if you’re in a pinch to let your pup stretch its legs. If not, I would recommend you choose a different dog park.

Great dog park. Just the right size to discourage huge crowds. We went Saturday afternoon on a beautiful 75 degree day and there were only 2 small dogs in the small dog side, and 3 in the large dog side (before we arrived with our 3).

Plenty of parking (including shady spots) both on the park side as well as behind the Bellaire Animal Pound.

The small dog park could use some agility obstacles like they have in the large dog (over 40 lbs) park, but it had a shaded picnic table and good space.

The large dog park has a nice agility course and plenty of length to throw frisbees and balls to give your pup a nice bit of exercise. There is plenty of shade and places to sit.

There’s water fountains on both sides and owners seem pretty good about cleaning up after their pups. Plenty of waste bags and 💩 picker uppers.

Will definitely be back!

Great dog park. Mostly locals but also frequented by individuals from out of town who are receiving medical treatment. Parking can be a little tight on weekends but you can park in the grassy lot next to the parking lot. There’s a morning crowd and an evening crowd with some overlap. Weekends can get a little crazy. There’s a large dog side and a small dog side. No kids under 12 on the large side but the small side is generally empty. This park while not the fanciest park in Houston is friendly and clean. There’s a Facebook page you can find under officer Lucy dog park and patrons (old pups). Good place to ask dog related questions if you’re new in town or just new to dog ownership. If you’re in town for medical care and need a place to let your pups run off some energy and get a little social interaction yourselves please know you’re welcome. Morning crowd tends toward older retired folks and the afternoon crowd tends to be younger working folks but like I said there’s a lot of overlap.
