Discover the scenic beauty of Agnes S. Andreae Nature Preserve, one of the top spots for pet-friendly hiking and outdoor adventures in Afton, MI. The preserve is celebrated for its well-marked trails, breathtaking river views, and accessible natural landscapes that make it a favorite destination among dog owners in the Afton area. While not a traditional dog park, this preserve offers several miles of easy to moderate hiking that you and your leashed dog will love. There are boardwalks, benches for rest, open places to explore, and lush greenery from mid-June onward. Whether you have a small dog or a more active pup, the varied incline and river access make for a memorable outing.
Agnes S. Andreae Nature Preserve is kid-friendly and even features some sandy spots along the river for wading or taking in the views. It has public restrooms available seasonally and limited but convenient parking for visitors. While the park is not fenced and dogs must remain leashed, many guests appreciate the friendly vibe and tranquil setting just outside of Afton. The preserve is also located near Indian River, so you can enjoy a day of hiking and then head to local pet-friendly spots for a treat or meal. Bring your four-legged friend and experience this beautiful section of northern Michigan together!
After being away for years, it was nice to be able to come back to a nature preserve so close to home. The trails are very well marked, and the scenery is absolutely gorgeous.
One of my favorite hikes in the area
Wild landscape, gorgeous river, views, some incline yet overall friendly for my little dogs, nature megaphone for some “sit and stare” time to take it all in
Stunning in April when not many leaves as the views are even better, then turns to lush green everywhere by mid June. Nice little sandy spot along river to wade and enjoy
Stop by food trucks near Northland Brewing and Wildwood Coffee downtown Indian River to round out a solid day in the area.
Beautiful trail!! AllTrails says it’s 1.9miles and 183 elevation. There are some ups and downs but pretty easy. Love the river views and the megaphone made by Petoskey HS! All dirt roads to get to the parking lot and only parking for about six cars. Seemed a little awkward to have to walk around the back of a house to get to the bridge but it’s what u have to do :). Looks it connects to another preserve if you want more mileage.
Beautiful.. boardwalks, sights and sounds. Take the trip, do the hike. Drove 3 hours to come here after passing through this town multiple times. Support the small local town, they have great food and friendly faces 😀
Beautiful hike with an amazing river view. Lots of places to get close to water. Random benches around trail with very clear marks and maps along the path
