Old Bathing Beach: A Dog-Friendly Gem in Elk Rapids, MI

Located on N Bayshore Dr, Old Bathing Beach offers a peaceful, pet-friendly escape for families and dog owners looking for a welcoming spot in Elk Rapids. Known by locals as Dam Beach, this charming shoreline provides ample space for play, relaxation, and even rock hunting—with soft sand, shallow clear waters, and the possibility of finding unique Petoskey stones. The tranquil atmosphere is ideal for dogs to accompany their owners, with plenty of interesting scents and sprawling sand to explore.

While there are a few picnic tables and a clean port-a-potty, amenities remain minimal to preserve the area’s natural beauty. I love stopping at this beach when I get the chance. It has a good, flat beach to the water. It’s not an overcrowded beach, which is amazing! The water is shallow and clear, great for the kids! Keep your eyes open for those Petoskey stones, they’re there!

Very nice quaint beach. If your a rock hunter and looking for beach glass you can find some stuff. Helps to go early. Has a few picnic tables and a port a potty which was clean when I was there. There is parking there not alot. Some parts of the beach are private owners and there are signs. Have fun and enjoy!😎

Very nice little beach with limited facilities. Soft sand and shallow water make this a great family stop. Also the beach and water had many smooth colorful stones and interesting shells.

It is call Dam beach from Elk Rapid village website, it started from the Hydro Power Plant off Ames Street, the Dam Beach is a favorite location for residents and families to spend time. There are lake houses in between public access, but since there are not a lot of traffic, so there are not a lot of concern about personal space or noise.
Beach area is clean, sand are soft, and please keep it that way.
