Wetzel State Recreation Area is a spacious and welcoming spot for dog owners seeking pet-friendly trails and open areas in New Haven, MI. This park is known for its easy-to-follow, well-groomed hiking paths, making it an excellent choice for dog-friendly hiking adventures. The area offers both scenic views, with beautiful waters and wetland wildlife, and plenty of open space for dogs to run and explore. Many visitors praise the large, mowed field used by the Radio Control Club of Detroit, which doubles as a popular spot to let dogs stretch their legs, play, and practice obedience.
The park is accessible to everyone, featuring wheelchair-accessible entrances and parking lots. Families will appreciate the kid-friendly atmosphere and the presence of public restrooms, making it convenient for longer outings. While there are no dedicated fenced dog areas, the expansive trails and open spaces provide a wonderful opportunity to enjoy nature and safely exercise your dog. Don’t forget your bug spray, as the area can be buggy during certain times of year!
Lots of bugs (bring deet) My dog had a great time working doing what he’s meant to do.
We are very lucky to have these types of opportunities offered to the (SE) citizens of Michigan. Keep supporting!
A very nice place for a walk! The waters that surround the trail are beautiful to look at!
It’s a rather large area but I like to go to “The Radio Control Club of Detroit” it’s a designated area where the club members fly remote control planes and drones and such. It’s a good 300 yards long and maybe a 100 yards wide and they keep it mowed. It is an absolutely brilliant place to let your dog run. I do come across other people that like to do the same and hunters and hikers but I have never had an issue. Across the road is a lake and swampy area where there are a lot of wetland wildlife. It’s really quite beautiful and a great place to meditate and commune with nature. Also, if you look north you can walk on paths all the way up to the next parking area. It’s a cool little hike.
Been here several times. Easy to follow trail. Dogs are welcomed. Not the most scenic but you can find beauty there still.
Not much to see here. The vegatation is all the same. The fall color was not great when we went. The path is nicely groomed and it is very quiet. I prefer to walk in the woods, this is very open trails.
