Veterans Park is located across the street from the home I grew up in. I have lots of great memories of playing sports and participating in summer recreation programs that no longer exist. The park has been well maintained over the last few years by the community and was named after Mr. Lawrence McKinney who served as a youth coach, mentor and role model for inner city youth for over 4 decades. Coach McKinney mentored many of Saginaw’s men and women who are now prominent figures in our local community and others. Just to mention a few, Brian Pruitt ( Power of Dad), Dr. Ramont Roberts ( Superintendent of Saginaw Public Schools), Darvin Ham ( Head Coach of the LA Lakers), Draymond Green ( Golden State Warriors) LaMarr Woodley ( Pittsburgh Steelers), Mark Macon ( Detroit Pistons)
