Good and bad… You can snag a spot right next to the ocean, just behind a sand dunes, listen to the waves crash and watch the stars as you fall asleep… you are right next to the beach.
The Bad, the mosquitos here are insane, I was here in December and there was literally a black cloud around my tent. For ? a night the showers are cold…and despite clear skies, the fog caused a ton of water to collect on and build up in my tent… like it rained but it didn’t.
There were maybe 10 people is this entire campground, it was warm, but if this place was full, I think the natural beauty might be lost but perhaps the mosquitos would have more targets and thin out a bit..
Really enjoy coming to this campground. Very affordable, quiet, and usually available year round. There are not many amenities but it gets the job done. I prefer the distance away from the tourist area. Ramps are easy to get to. Sites are reasonable in size.
The facilities are a little sparse, no power and no hot water, but it is a great location and the camp hosts are great. I camped for 5 days and kept all my cameras and devices charged with a small jackery solar generator. My visit was March 30th through April 4th and biting insects weren’t a problem but I had plenty of repellent just in case. This may vary from year to year. There is limited light pollution on the island so the night sky viewing is spectacular. If you visit, spend a little extra time choosing the site. The front of the campground has smaller sites but the back row next to the dunes has more room and trails leading to the beach. No generators allowed on the D loop so if you’re on the D loop you need solar if you need power. Don’t forget sunscreen and check the forecast.. I spent one day in strong winds with gale warnings.

Each campsite is paved and comes with a picnic table, and the layout is spacious and bike-friendly. While the sites are non-electric, a bit of self-sufficiency goes a long way — and it’s totally worth it for the experience. There’s a dump station and fresh water available just across the street, so everything you need is close at hand.
The campground is also conveniently located just a short ride or drive from town, where you can grab groceries, explore the Ocracoke Lighthouse, or enjoy a meal at one of the local restaurants.
