(5/4/24) My first time hiking this trail. What a gem! I love all the moss blanketing everything. The footpath is easy to follow, well marked with yellow blazes, tons of tree roots to navigate. The evergreen forest is very beautiful. So calm and peaceful here. I jumped two large doe. Parking fits 20 cars. They even have EV charging stations. First time I’ve ever seen that at a trailhead. The end of the trail treats you to a little sandy beach overlooking the ocean. Had this beach all to myself. No one else out here. Tried my “Merlin Bird ID” app to identify the melody coming from the treetops above me. The app indicates it’s a Song Sparrow. Would definitely return to hike this lovely place again.
This is the one of the only places I seen any seals on my trip! The walk to the shore line was great and the views there were even better. You def should check this out
Absolutely beautiful. The walking path through the forest is pleasant with beautiful vivid green moss and vibrant pines and evergreens. Small red squirrels every now and then. We went in early May and saw about 30-40 seals sunbathing on the coastal beaches and small islands
Peaceful area with a mix of forest, field and coastal areas. We were hoping for seals but were not in luck, but the views were great nonetheless. From the parking lot, we walked down the forest trail but up the Higgins farm road, and only saw one car. Great spot! Suggested donation of ? per visitor to support the preserve with collection box at the visitor center.
Want to get away from the tourist crowdsNULL This is an easy peaceful hike to the secluded north section of Acadia. There is limited parking, but sufficient since this is not a highly frequented place. I went on a whim and was very pleasantly surprised by the beauty and tranquility of the preserve. There were a handful of people that I encountered, and everyone was pleasant and kept to themselves trying not to disturb the peacefulness of this place.
The trail to the beach is just shy of a mile to the beach. I took the Higgins Farm Road down to the shore trail. I wasn’t aware of the Big Wood Trail which would have been a nice easy hike. Either way it is considered an easy hike. It is important to remember that the persevere is surrounded by private property.
Great rock formations to explore and you might get lucky with the local seal population that frequence this area. While I was not there for sunset, I am sure this is a superb place to what the sunset.
Next time I am in Acadia I will return and bring my friends and family.
