🐾 Kids at the Dog Park: Real Stories, Safety Risks & Smarter Solutions

Dakota (Dog) Park is a popular destination for dog owners seeking an open, pet-friendly space in Brentwood, California. With separate areas designated for small and large dogs, this park provides a safe, fenced environment where dogs can play off-leash and socialize. The grassy areas are well-groomed and spacious, and there are paved walking paths and accessible facilities, making it easy for everyone to enjoy. The park’s relaxed vibe and friendly local community make it a frequent spot for returning visitors and those just discovering dog-friendly activities in Brentwood.
Owners benefit from amenities like benches—some shaded—for comfortable supervision, and convenient water sources for thirsty pups (though some visitors prefer to bring their own clean bowls due to variable maintenance). Parking is available, though it may be limited during busy times. The park rarely feels crowded, offering a stress-free outing even on weekends and providing plenty of green space for play, exploration, and socialization. Whether you’re new to the area or a long-time resident, Dakota (Dog) Park stands out as a welcoming, dog-loving retreat.
We visit the “large dog” side with our small-to-medium pack. The larger dogs here are mostly respectful and the human walking paths (sand/cement) are always clean. There are 2 benches in the shade and a 3rd in the sun with plenty of space between for social distancing. It’s rare that we show up with more than 2 families there already so it never feels crowded. There are many times, even on weekends, where we show up and there are no other dogs for ours to play with. They still enjoy the grass and being off leash. Someone left lots of nice throwables tucked into the fence. While the water fountains themselves are a little grimy, there is a separate stainless steel bowl which I prefer anyways so I can dump out the nasty old water, rinse, and fill it up fresh. Our favorite dog spot in town, couldn’t ask for more 🙂
Poorly maintained. Water fountain leaks. Mud puddles. Grass needs to be reseeded. Holes in running area. Weeds. Have submitted multiple requests to Brentwood Parks for maintenance. Maybe if more people complain, something will be done.
I take my dogs here daily, usually in the morning. I have small dogs so I bring them to the small dog side. It’s a decent size and the other dog owners are nice and courteous. Parking can be an issue at times however.
Would be great if there was someone to play with. But tons of things to smell here anyway!
Update: came back Sunday late afternoon and met a wonderful group of friendly people who introduced their dogs to mine AND taught me what the heck to do in a dog park!
We live in Prescott Arizona and are accustomed to wide open spaces. Considering the density of the area adjacent to the park it was a relief to relax and let your dog run in a very large well groomed grassy space, that we don’t have much of in Prescott. Also notable were all the little micro parks well within walking distance well placed throughout this area.
