First time visitor.
I would give it 5 stars, but those crazy mosquitoes made us have to rush to get off the trail. (Biting my face!)
May go back in a few weeks as this seems like a great hike to see the Fall leaves.
Hopefully the mosquitos won’t be a worry.
Great trail signage, restrooms at trailhead, may need bug spray. 🤨
The Platue Trail in the winter is perfect. Not too hard even with ice but long enough for a workout. About 3.5 miles.
Two hiking trails, one is about 4 miles and the other about about 1 1/2 miles, mostly wooded. Really nice hikes. You can do part of the longer trail and reconnect with the shorter trail at a few points.
Two hike options here, the plateau trail is more moderate and has a larger elevation change, and the oak Hill trail is easier and more accessible.
Both are good hikes, significantly less crowded than some of the more touristy areas of the park.
Very nice moderate hikes that are away from the busy tourist areas. This was actually my first time here and I have lived here many years!
From the Oak Hill Trailhead, you have two hike options. The Plateau Trail is 4.6 miles and has more elevation change than the 1.4 mile Oak Hill Trail.
The two hiking trails actually cross each other as well as have some common sections. This gives you the opportunity to add some short loops onto the Oak Hill Trail allowing you to see the Hemlock Gorge and another small lake. Without having to restart an entirely new trail.
The trails are very well marked and maintained. They are also open year round.
One reviewer only gave this area four stars due to the mosquitos. I feel that it is wrong to deduct a star because you were not prepared! Always pack sunscreen, bug repellent and water!
During the wet season this could be a very mosquito infested area. So be prepared!
