We didn’t expect to see any bears when we went since we got there later than planned. But we were surprised to see one peeping over a hill at us, that turned around to lumber off but stopped & looked towards us again & then toodled off. It seemed to be a younger one. That was the only one we saw. Saw several deer, hawks, herons & of course the buzzards waiting for you to drop per normal it seems in the refuges. It’s interesting because unlike the Alligator River Wildlife Refuge, this one has more all-dirt roads, where the true main “drive” parts of ARWR have rocks & gravel. I can understand why 1 of the signs said that if there’s been rain, you *will* get stuck – totally believe it. Definitely want to check out the trail and do walking when there’s cooler weather & less biting flies. But we were there in the summer, so we knew that was going to happen. Lots of dead ends where you think the road will be open, but it’s not – so there was a bit of circling back. Saw a couple of other cars while we were out & about, but that was it. Cell service was, of course, lacking & the car satnav was confused a bit as well, but we had downloaded an offline Google map of the area so we were good. And as someone else mentioned, no bathrooms to speak off except a random port-a-potty at one of the observation points & I think the map showed 1 more elsewhere. All in all, a nice ride to figure out future trips to the area.

Birds, bears, snakes, deer, raccoons, etc. Probably alligators too. Don’t Let a small dog run loose.

Time of year makes a big difference depending on the bird migration. We saw a rare sight of a red Wolf.
