What a hidden gem–and only about an hour from North Raleigh! I hiked a trail on a peaceful Saturday morning. Not very crowded.
This is a lovely park but the back 1/2 of the Summit Trail appears to have had controlled burns or partial deforestation which was not pretty to look at. The trails are moderately difficult but my children were able to traverse the terrain easily. Trails were well maintained. Amenities at the park office were clean. If we are in the area in the future, we definitely plan to go back.

Spacious, flat, gravel spot with plenty of room to back in a pull out. Camp is quiet and bathrooms are newer and well maintained. So impressed that we are considering planning a trip back down to stay longer.
We have been here a few times and have loved it each time. Everyone at the information center is friendly and welcoming. They have a pet snake named Charlie that they let people hold which is a highlight for our kids. There is a toddler friendly path right near the information building that has a lot of great interactive attractions (large rope spider web, eye spy animals hidden in the trees, instruments that sound like woodpeckers/toads, etc). We have also hiked a few of the trails. Our favorites so far are the ones that go along the creek. They do a great job of marking the trails clearly as well as providing information about the length and difficulty level of each one.
