Very well marked trail system, lots of ups & downs, some rock scrambles make trails interesting. Scenic overlook where during the Revolutionary War, signal fires were lit to send messages to the troops up & down Hudson River. Only downfall is the road noise on the west side of park, takes away from being out in nature.
Nice place to walk the dog, always quiet, rarely see anyone here.
4.75 miles and 1260 feet of elevation for the complete loop, running from the trailhead across from the baseball field to blue, yellow, white, blue, red, blue, and out (according to my fitbit). Not very strenuous. Seems to be so infrequently trafficked that the trail is invisible at parts although the blazing is adequate so you won’t get lost. Unfortunately the views are not great, there are three overlooks but tree cover means you can’t see all that much. You can see the Bear Mtn bridge from the blue trail overlook, for what it’s worth, but there are better sights in the area. I have to take a point off for road noise, traffic on Route 9 can be heard for the entire walk and the red trail passes so close to the highway you can practically reach out and touch it.
Hiked the full loop trail blue to yellow to white to blue to red to blue blazes. Amazing hike – moderate to sometimes difficult climbs. Streams running through the red blaze. Parking is at the Sprout Brook Park gravel parking lot by a baseball field, right across the trail head start through a narrow opening through a guard rail. Well maintained. Caution with wildlife – one member of my group has close encounters with 2 snakes…
