Hickok Brook is a little visited and lightly maintained piece of NYS land that happens to be near me. The trails are somewhat overgrown and poorly marked, but fairly level and easy. The roads are rutted. There is a scenic pond, though it’s not suitable for swimming. There are no viewpoints, waterfalls or other major attractions. The place has no amenities at all: no toilets, water, power or cell service. So come prepared. On the positive side, it offers free campsites, including several on the pond. Nearby Tusten Mountain is a better place for a vigorous hike, and Minisink Battleground Park, which has more amenities for an easy hike (say, with kids)

This place is pretty cool and near enough to all my favorite places in NY. I arrived early ish (11) set up camp and went about my day. Came back and everything was as I left it (as it should be)Make sure you go slowly down the road. When it rains the road starts to pot hole out. I have a small fwd car and it did just fine at a slow pace.Only two complaints.1. You’ll hear lots of gun shots in the area till around 11. Not much you can do about that cept bring ear buds or a speaker to drown it out.2. People leave their trash behind. All the sites have someone’s camp fire with trash in it. No one’s gonna burn your trash. Please take it with you.

Amazing place for dispersed camping. If you drive far enough in there are three spots right on the water. HOWEVER the road in is rough, strewn with deep potholes. Shook my poor van hard enough to topple a cabinet screwed to the floor!

Been hunting this area for almost 20 years. Recently I find more junk and waste at the trailheads. Do your part by packing out all your waste, so we can keep NYS forests clean and wild.

We come here for 4th of July camping every year and it is always beautiful. The area is clean, the lake is beautiful and the nights are quiet.
