FAQ for Great Mills Canoe & Kayak Launch in Great Mills Maryland:
Wish I’d read the reviews first. This should be described as a put in, not a launch. You will have to get in the water to get in your boat. But that’s practice for getting in the deeper water a couple hundred yards downstream to get over a tree trunk. And again. And again. And duck the downed tree overhanging the water. Then there’s a portage around a big snarl … What I’m saying is The Way is Shut downstream until crews with big saws and cranes clear the downed trees blocking the water and the ones overhanging the water.I guess this put in would be a good place to wade on a hot day?P.S. Thanks again to the very helpful resident who described the conditions on the creek when he was trying to read a book. He did not say “Told you so,” when we returned.
It is an awesome place to picnic and maybe play in the creek, but the launch area is lacking in many ways. You will need water shoes for this launch.
Quite a few trees down and shallow. Had to get out and walk over rocks 4 or 5 times in about a .25 mile and then path blocked by trees. Too bad because it was very pretty and shaded. Water was also clean and clear. It would help if the parks and rec department could get out there an clear out a few of the downed trees.
No idea where to stop. my family and I have been planning this trip the whole week we were going to leave a car at the stopping point so that we could leave the kayaks there drive to Great Mills to get our pick up truck and drive back to get the kayaks. So we looked for the stopping point of the route online since there is no map in the launch site which led us to St Marys City’s launch which said private property no launching without permit which didn’t make sense we kept looking and we couldn’t find any other place you can’t paddle against the current so there is no way to make the trip extremely stressing all we did was waste gas and we just ended up going home what a waste of time and money this place needs better directions.
The water starts off very shallow and once you go under the bridge at Rt. 5 there are obstacles ahead including a downed tree blocking any kayakers from passing. The river needs clearing to be a viable kayaking location.
