We visited Mt.Mitchell in October during peak leaf season. Unfortunately, the higher elevation of Mt.Mitchell was past it’s peak. But it was still totally worth the drive and the walk. We were up above the clouds on a beautiful fall morning. We got wonderful pictures and a nice little workout. We would definitely do it again. The drive getting there is spectacular.

Wonderful day driving up to Mount Mitchell, nature at its best. The leaves were spectacular! The scenery surrounding the blue ridge parkway will take your breath.

This is a great place to visit if you like mountains. Beautiful scenery. The 300 yard walk up to the top is not too strenuous.
Just be sure to always wear or take a jacket or sweater. It’s a lot cooler up there!

Mount Mitchell is the highest peak on this side of the Mississippi and well worth the trip. It’s literally a change in weather to come here from Hendersonville. I imagine it drops from 7 to 10° on average. It was cloudy so we had no visibility it also rained on the way back, but it was all good fun and a great time and so glad that they have repaired the parkway in order for us to get there. Mount Mitchell is a great day trip destination for the whole family.

We were lucky that part of the parkway and road up to Mt Mitchell recently opened. Terrific twisty turny ride up the mountain was fun. The ranger we met was a friendly young lady full of information and knowledge of the area. The coffee shop even opened up for the first time in a a while. Fyi, if you’re over 70 you do need to walk UPHILL to the summit. Its doable, just take it easy. Great park. You need to see it.
