Beautiful hike. Lots of people. The water is very cold and it’s great for a little dip in the pools. There are snakes but as long as you don’t bother them it’s fine.
This is a moderate hike. It’s 9 miles around however the first three miles are tough. I only did the three miles and it was enough for me. The park rangers are very friendly and offer great advise. They will tell you everything that you need to know. Bring lots of water and a camera for pictures. Ideal for swimming but make sure you go early. We went and got there around 8am. By the time we came back around 12:30 pm, the main parking lot and the overflow parking lot were completely packed.
Trail is virtually shrouded by a tree canopy and follows a mountain stream so be prepared for bugs especially of the stinging/biting variety as well as a considerable amount of trekking uphill. But the rewards are great as there are at least 5 waterfalls or more to feast your eyes on. Due to time constraints I only saw 3. Would have loved to see the next two waterfalls as they were progressively getting taller the further along the trail you went.
I’ve been to Whiteoak Canyon Falls more than 3 or 4 times, but this was my first time hiking from the Lower Trailhead.
We got there around 10:30 a.m., and the main parking lot was already full—but thankfully, there’s a NULL parking lot close to the park entrance!
I bought an annual pass for Shenandoah National Park because I love SNP!
We hiked for about an hour and reached the falls. It was amazing—my kids enjoyed playing in the water.
We spent over 3 hours there!
We’ll definitely go again from the Lower Trailhead.

Arrived around 7:10AM on 3.29.25
About 8-10 cars already there near ranger station parking.
Porta potties were relatively clean and stocked with full toilet paper rolls.
The overflow parking is pretty obvious at someone’s field and yes, is NULL but fortunately didn’t need it.
7:20AM Started the trail
7:54 Saw the 1st waterfall
Beautiful water falls, can get really close to some.
Hiked up to “The View” sign where there’s a large waterfall that snakes far down.
With hardly any stops left the view sign at 9:52AM and got back down by 11:25AM.
By then, parking lot near ranger station was packed.
But saw the rangers doing a good job of letting people in when new spaces opened.
Asked directions for Skyline Drive and a nice ranger almost lost his lunch (container fell off the car) in his rush to help us get the “printed” Skyline directions.
Had trouble finding one of the roads, stopped by a market to ask for new directions.
Use this for initial directions to Skyline Drive. Then follow the printed directions provided by Rangers.
