Elakala Trail is a scenic, dog-friendly hiking experience located in Davis, West Virginia, within the popular Blackwater Falls State Park. Known for its breathtaking waterfalls and lush forest surroundings, this trail is just a short walk from Blackwater Lodge, making it easily accessible for both locals and visitors. The path leads directly to a picturesque wooden bridge atop Elakala Falls, where you and your pup can enjoy stunning views year-round—including magical frozen waterfalls in the winter and vibrant foliage in the fall.
While not a traditional fenced dog park, Elakala Trail offers pet-friendly trails perfect for dogs on leash. The trail is short but natural; expect roots, occasional mud, and a non-paved surface. There is plenty of shade from towering trees along the way, making it comfortable even during warmer months. It’s an excellent destination for landscape photographers, dog owners looking for a peaceful nature walk, or anyone seeking a unique dog park in Davis, West Virginia.
This is an amazing waterfall in the heart of Blackwater Falls State Park! The hike is quite easy and short, it leads to a bridge which overlooks the waterfall. Said hike is right next to the Blackwater Falls State Park lodge. The scenery is also great other than the waterfall!
I recently visited on an autumn photography road-trip. This place is a must for landscape photography or simply enjoying nature! I’ll be blogging about this, soon. It’ll be easy to find on my website. ~Faz 👋

Short walk from the lodge to a wooden bridge atop the falls. Just beyond the bridge you can look back up toward the falls for a better view.

This trail was one of the most beautiful hikes in the fall. The colors in the ravine along with the waterfalls was a fantastic part of our 20 mile day around Spruce Knob

Nice trail within the forest with 2 views of the Elkala waterfall and Blackwater waterfalls.
Short walk to the bridge to be on top of a waterfall.
There are a lot of roots throughout the path and when wet it does get muddy.
It’s a quick hike, but it is not paved.
