Located at 7274-7296 Studley Rd, Shelton House Trail Park offers pet owners and history buffs a beautiful place to enjoy nature and local heritage. This dog park in Mechanicsville, Virginia, features scenic, pet-friendly trails winding through historic farmland, woodland areas, and past the notable Shelton House—the former home of Patrick Henry’s wife. The area is wheelchair accessible and family-friendly, making it an ideal destination for the whole community.
Enjoy dog-friendly hiking along maintained paths, with plenty to see—including a long bridge over a stream and wetlands, historical markers, military earthworks, and well-placed educational signage. Dogs are welcome on-leash, so you can explore safely together. The park’s spacious setting and accessible layout make it a favorite for both daily outings and special walks.
Nice walk. Interesting sites along the trail, as the cemetery stones have had the occupants moved to another cemetery. Well worth the walk.
The house was home of Patrick Henry’s wife, and they were married here. It is open for tours occasionally. There are trails past active farm fields and into the woods leading to a long bridge over a stream and wetlands.
Great place to walk and learn history. There are no bikes allowed on trails at Rural Plains / Shelton House.
Managed by the Richmond National Park the Shelton House trail is a great place to enjoy nature and learn history.
I enjoy walking here fairly often. I season volunteers give wonderful individual tours of the house on the property but even off season the signage is good and many folks come here for the recreational opportunity. Besides the house (older than the USA) there are other physical historical resources including military earthworks. Recently they have restored the roof and begin work around the house to improve it longevity by controlling ground water.
