Discover a one-of-a-kind dog walking and adventure spot at the Abandoned PA Turnpike in Wells Tannery, Pennsylvania. This historic stretch of unused highway offers miles of paved paths, fascinating tunnels covered in graffiti art, and a truly memorable environment that sets it apart from typical dog parks. With over 11 miles of former interstate and two impressive tunnels, it’s an ideal spot for dog owners seeking pet-friendly trails and dog-friendly hiking experiences.
The Abandoned PA Turnpike is best suited for leashed dog walks, runs, or even bike rides with your canine companion. The area is not wheel-chair accessible and features a gravel lot for parking, followed by an extended walk to the tunnel entrances. Be sure to bring your own water and supplies, as there are no dedicated amenities such as water fountains, restrooms, or fenced dog areas. Explore this popular local adventure, but don’t forget your flashlight when you approach the tunnel for an extra layer of safety!
Short walk along paved highway kinda feels like you are in a fallout game especially while you are walking up to the tunnel entrance with the over grown bushes and years of graffiti that’s been accumulated it’s definitely an experience worth checking out I would recommend bringing flashlights. Could be fun on a bike
Amazing, 11 miles of interstate ,dissolving w 2 tunnels
Great easy hike to a neat ruin. The tunnel is completed but the roadway was ended right after. There are remnants of both lanes still there. There is some graffiti. The parking can be the gravel lot followed by a 1.5 /2 mile road all to the tunnels end. The “red” spray paint is correct when looking for – how much longer. Flashlight on your phone is good enough.
What a great experience! Kinda eerie but so neat to explore! I would suggest not going when it’s cold or windy out. The wind through the tunnel was so cold the day we went. The graffiti inside and around is pretty cool..
This was so cool. Had to walk thru the tunnel. Glad I had a flashlite or I think I would have noped out. Some real cool graffiti from talented artists all along the tunnel. Found out there is a half marathon here in October that sounds awesome.
