Desert View Trail, located on the Pacific Crest Trail in the heart of Mt Laguna, California, offers a unique dog-friendly hiking experience in a stunning high desert ecosystem. As part of the Laguna Mountain National Recreational Area, this picturesque trail is known for its breathtaking panoramic views and peaceful natural surroundings, making it one of the most sought-after pet-friendly trails in Southern California. With easy access from Burnt Rancheria Campground and free parking at most trailheads, it’s a convenient destination for dog owners looking for a scenic outing with their pets.
Dogs are welcome on leash throughout the trail, and there is a drinking fountain available on the loop section—perfect for keeping pups hydrated during your adventure. The trail’s interpretive features let you learn about local plant life, while picnic tables offer restful stops with spectacular vistas. Do keep an eye out for rattlesnakes, especially in the warmer months, and plan for rapidly changing mountain weather by layering your clothing. Desert View Trail is ideal for an early morning or evening hike, providing a safe and pleasant escape for both you and your furry companion.
Part of PCT, this trail represents the high desert eco system and features a panoramic view of a vast southern california wilderness and natural habitats. This trail is also inside the Laguna Mountain National Recreational Area with national park level of land protection. Parking is free in most of the trailheads, except some bathroom facilities that require Natinal Forest Day Pass or an annual National Park Golden Pass. Trails can be techinal due to rocky surfaces and elevation variation. Weather can vary drastically, so layer up is the best clothing strategy.
It is a fairly easy trail, though I recommend it in the early morning during summer heat. There can be rattlesnakes, so be careful if you go in the evening. It is very nice fall through spring.
If you are staying in the Burnt Rancheria campground, definitely do it it. You can get the trailhead right there. There is a drinking fountain on the short mile loop (because it is part of the PCT) to get a drink for you and your dog. Ooh, forgot to mention it is leash dog friendly. I know some people have well trained off leash dogs, so just a reminder to watch for rattlesnakes.
This is a short trail and a good intro to Anza Borrego. The interpretive brochure is a really nice way to get to know the cacti and other vegetation that grow in this desert. It’s right across from the campground and makes a pleasant evening hike if you’re so inclined. There are great views here.
I didn’t see anybody on the trail both days I was hiking. Very quiet & peaceful.
A little short, but breathtaking views for sure! If you pay close attention there are some picnic tables up a hill to sit down and enjoy the view with a snack.
