My family stayed in the Crabtree cabin. The cabin was very cozy and clean. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen was well stocked with the necessary utensils to cook and to use the grill. Each cabin has a front porch with a table and chairs, a charcoal grille, and a firepit that can be cooked on surrounded by Adirondack chairs. The camp store is just a short walk away and carries most of the necessities including firewood. There is a lake that you can kayak and fish on. There is no parking that I could find down near the lake though, so we had to drop off our kayaks at the water and then go back and park the truck at the cabin again. There is no cellphone service out there. They do have wifi located in the playground area and it doesn’t reach any of the cabins, but, really, I think you can handle a few days off the grid. We enjoyed ourselves!

We’ve been going to Montebello campground for several years. It’s one of our favorite mountain spots close to home. Its about 3 hours from the peninsula area of Virginia. We have a 25ft camper and going up the Blue Ridge Parkway and secondary highway is a manageable drive. The campground is very near Crabtree Falls which is definitely worth a hike if you haven’t been. Ask the locals at the camp store for the other great fall overlook, but requires a 4WD vehicle, although gorgeous and worth it! There is also an Appalachian Trail entry point nearby as well if that’s your jam. The grounds are well kept, all the amenities, W/E/S. The bath house is always clean and well lit. They have a stocked trout pond and a spacious camp store (WE MISS THE CAFE). We’ve also stayed in the cabins and LOVE them. If you’re looking for a gorgeous mountain getaway this is the place to go.

After reading many good reviews we decided to visit for a long weekend.
Pros: it was a quiet campground that is off the grid with an accessible pond. Campers were friendly. The country store was awesome and well stocked.
Cons: we went to 3 different sites to try to find a level”ish” one. We quit at the 3rd site and used all of our blocks and it still wasn’t close to being level.
I wouldn’t describe the bathrooms as clean. They were rough with rust and mildewed toilets.
On Saturday a large group of “day use” people came to picnic and go fishing. They basically took over the pond and were yelling and swearing and invading other people’s space as they were trying to fish. When they left, they left hotdogs (raw) and bread that they were using for bait all over the grass. There were peddle boats for use and a couple kayaks that looked like they had been well used.
The only thing we caught fishing was a dead trout in the trout pond and a fishing rod in the other “lake”.
We had a good time anyway- it was nice getting away, but I think we would stay at a state park next time. It’s cheaper, usually sites are level and bathrooms are well maintained. It was a “one and done” for us.

This place was great. Very peaceful and the cabins are very accommodating. It had everything we needed to host 10 people for the weekend. My only suggestion would be a better walkway between cabins A and B. I do know they are not always shared but up and down for the older folks was a little challenging. But we do look forward to coming back again in the future.

Grew up in these mountains and love coming home for vacation now that I live in NoVA. Coming to camp at Montebello restores my soul and brings peace back to my heart. Montebello campground may be rustic and “out of the way” but it is peaceful and relaxing. It’s a safe campground where my brothers and I grew up, and now my son and niece and nephews get to grow up here.
The staff at the store are a second family, and the camp hosts are always friendly. The facilities are clean, and the camp hosts are quick to act when attention is needed. The lake is clean and the fishing is always good. The pay pond at the store is stocked with good sized trout. There are hiking trails in the campground as well as close by. There are swimming and fishing opportunities up and down the mountain, and the parkway is a quick 5 minute drive away.
I’ve enjoyed almost 30 years of camping here along with my family, and look forward to another 30 and then some. Looking forward to checking out one of the 6(?) Cabins they have available. Thanks Montebello for being there when I need to come home and reconnect with my roots.
