🐾 How to Handle Aggressive Dogs at the Dog Park – Real Advice from Dog Owners
Visiting the dog park can be a joyful activity for both you and your furry friend—but aggressive encounters can quickly […]
Located in the heart of Hollywood at 6567 Selma Ave, Los Angeles, CA, Selma Park is a small urban pocket park known for its leafy, shady spots and close proximity to tourist attractions. While not officially a dog park, dog owners in the area report walking their dogs here despite official signage. The park is fenced with a tall wrought-iron barrier and has one main entrance, providing some containment and security. However, it is important to note that, historically, the park has dealt with safety and cleanliness concerns due to frequent encampments and city management issues. As of August 2025, dedicated security is present during all open hours.
Selma Park offers a children’s playground, shaded benches, and a peaceful green space amidst the city bustle. There are no designated off-leash areas or separate enclosures for different dog sizes. The surrounding neighborhood is walkable and accessible via public transit, making it a potential resource for pet owners looking for a city retreat. However, visitors should remain aware of current park conditions and the presence of security staff onsite.
UPDATE 8/30/25 The park now has full time security from open to close funded thru 10/25 by our councilman. With hopes of starting programs such as yoga classes & other activities in an effort to make the park more user friendly for the community & school next door. Instead of the open drug use that’s been going on here.
3/25/25 Unfortunate that city parks & rec has allowed this once lovely little park to become unusable for the public. Go visit or just stop by to see what I mean.
3/6/24 There’s no longer an encampment on Selma Ave in front of the school. Yah. But Selma Park…. the homeless hang out in the park
Update 1/23/24 Parents tell me tents pop up on Selma every now & then and they report it to lapd and they’re promptly moved elsewhere. Unfortunately the park continues to be a mess and residents are afraid to use the park. Efforts to save the park haven’t gotten far. CD13 continues to allow encampments to ruin our neighborhoods & businesses.
10/11/23 Encampment hasn’t returned but efforts need to be made to “save the park”
8/22 the mayors Inside Safe program was used here and this encampment has been removed and Lapd Hollywood division is enforcing an ordinance the prohibits encampments from along this stretch of Selma Ave. from the park at Schrader to Cherokee Ave.
7/18/23: Last 4 photos are most recent, took them 7/16. The encampment has doubled in size and surely impacts the nearby businesses and the school when students return from summer break in August.
7/16/23This park is even worse than it was when I first posted photos here. I would consider it a DANGEROUS park to visit because of the growing encampment here. I will be contacting LAParks & our council district. It has been promised the encampment will be removed by 8/1 when students return to the school nextdoor, Larchmont Charter & Selma Elementary.

Beautiful little pocket park & childrens playground, not sure if neighbors go there now with the growing encampment on the sidewalk next to the park. Sidewalk there is totally blocked. Hopefully our city council will begin working on this issue soon. Encampments been on the news lately since there’s a school next door to the park. Sidewalk is blocked with tents & students have to walk in the street to get past the encampment. Now LAPD is at the gate to provide extra security during morning drop offs & afternoon pickups after a parent was attacked by someone from the encampment.

The playground iscovered in tags, broken glass, and needles. No children come here, only adults looking for a place to hang during the day. As the guy who encouraged us to leave described it: “this place is ghetto af”

This park, which is supposed to be for kids, always has at least a dozen bums drinking doing drugs and piling up their trash all over the playground equipment. Just your average example of why Hollywood and the people who run it is an absolute pathetic failure. Don’t expect to have clean safe access to any parks or public spaces in this neighborhood, they are only for bums.

The homeless community has taken over and destroyed this park. Pass by any hour during daytime or daylight hours and you will see nearly every person inside the park smoking or injecting some form of street drug and it’s shocking seeing the police drive by, watch it occur, and do absolutely nothing to clean up this sad pandemic ESPECIALLY with the park being next door to an elementary school! The children can’t even use this park. Our tax dollars hard at work, huh!

Unfortunately, this area is moderately unsafe. The city built a very tall wrought iron fence around the park, which means there is only one entrance/exit to the area. There are many unhoused people living in the park. This is not uncommon in LA and usually doesn’t bother me much, but I was far outnumbered and wasn’t comfortable with the fact that there was only one exit that could be easily blocked by a person. However, the park itself is very shady and beautiful. There is a smaller area in the back with a children’s playground and three cement chess tables. This park is also right behind the touristy area of Hollywood, and is easily walkable from the Hollywood/Highland stop on the Red Line train.
