I just left Nanjemoy after I stepped on a broken glass bottle that went through my Croc and into my foot. We visited today to search for shark teeth. All we saw was trash, trash and more trash. The area is littered with trash, clothes and broken bottles. I guess my tax dollars do not pay DNR to keep the area clean. I would not suggest bringing little children to this area until it’s cleaned up.

Great location for finding shark teeth. Gorgeous views. Go during low tide. The beach is about a half mile from the parking area.

Nice place to go for a short hike to the water. Be nice if they filled in the potholes at the parking area. I try Clean up every time I go since some people like to leave there trash. But always fun looking for fossils

Purse is not handicap accessible. There are about 10-15 parking spots off the side of the road by the sign. You take a small hike through the woods to reach the beach area. At high tide there is no beach! Check the tide charts to plan your adventure. Lots of shark teeth to be found. Don’t expect to find a megalodon or great white size tooth. These are small teeth. Bring a kneeling pad, water shoes and your patience. Get down close to gravelly areas and take your time looking for shiney black things. My 10yr said it was like looking for the smallest Lego in the pile. We found 41 teeth in about 2 hours. We also found other interesting fossil sea life. Enjoy the adventure, and hopefully you will be lucky enough to find a megalodon!

To look for sharks teeth and fossils: park at (38.4323070, -77.2517240). You’ll see a sign across the street that points to the “beach trail.” Follow that and you’ll see a gate on that side of the road. Go past the gate and walk maybe 1/4 mile to the beach. Go at low tide, so there’s more beach to explore. You’ll find larger shark teeth here than you would at brownies, but there are fewer there (that I was able to find). 2 stars because there’s a lot more effort I had to put in to find out about this place and get there, only to find 3 shark teeth after looking for an hour lol. At brownies I would have had a couple handfuls by an hour’s time.
